Meg Ryan
Meg Ryan is a blonde-haired, blue eyed
woman with a vivacious personality. Meg Ryan was born Margaret Mary Emily Hyra
to Susan (Duggan) who was the daughter of an English teacher, and also a
one-time actress. Harry Hyra was a math teacher. Her ancestry spans Ruthenian,
Polish and Irish in addition to German. ("Hyra") is her Ruthenian
surname "Ryan", is her maternal grandmother's maiden name. Meg was
graduated in June 1979 Bethel high school, Bethel. Meg moved to New York and
majored as journalist at New York University. To make extra money while working
on her degree, Meg went into acting using her new name Meg Ryan. Her screen
debut came in 1981, making a brief appearance as Candice Bergen's daughter in
George Cukor’s final film Rich and Famous (1981). She was chosen for the role
of Betsy in the television soap The World Turns the World Turns (1956) after
she was able to audition. She was a part of the show's cast from 1982 until
1984. Meg was also a part of the television series One of the Boys (1982) that
was later put on hold. Her move to Hollywood came in 1984, and was offered a
job on the western TV series Wildside (1985). Meg had a small role in Top Gun
(1986), later being part of Steven Spielberg's Innerspace (1987), in which she
appeared alongside Dennis Quaid. In the remake of D.O.A., she starred in a
second time with Quaid. (1988), and got married on Saint Valentine's Day 1991.
In 1989, Meg appeared in When Harry Met Sally... (1989) and the scene in the
restaurant gained a lot of attention. Meg was nominated to both the Golden
Globe and the BAFTA. In 1990, she co-starred with Tom Hanks in Joe Versus the
Volcano (1990) and this time she played three roles as DeDe/Angelica/Patricia.
She also was a part of the critically acclaimed Sleepless in Seattle (1993) and
was nominated for the Golden Globe. In 1994, Meg decided to act against type
when she appeared as an alcoholic wife and mother in the film When a Man Loves
a Woman (1994). She went back to being "cute" afterward with I.Q.
(1994) and French Kiss (1995). The year 1994 was the year that Meg was awarded
the Harvard Hasty Pudding Award as "Woman of the Year" and was also
voted as being one of "The 50 most beautiful people in the world
1994" by People Magazine.
